Wreckage

I open my eyes as the ringing in my ears fades to silence. I’m on my knees, forehead to the ground. The baby on my lap makes no cry, but waits; she’s smudged with soot, holding tightly the silver spoon in her hand. I lay her on the ground and walk away. Never looking back.
